The UCD School of Medicine, founded in 1854, is one of Ireland鈥檚 leading medical schools. At undergraduate level, UCD offer programmes in medicine, radiography and Biomedical Health & Life Sciences (BHLS) and at graduate level, UCD offer up to 40 programmes for healthcare professionals including hospital doctors, GPs, radiographers, forensic scientists and mental health professionals and for managers and administrators working in healthcare settings.

It gives me great pleasure to introduce you to the UCD School of Medicine. We are proud of our reputation: shaped and built over the last 168 years as a worldwide leader in the provision of excellence in education and research. At an undergraduate level, we offer six highly competitive and highly rated programmes in Medicine both undergraduate and graduate entry, Biomedical Health & Life Sciences, Radiography both undergraduate and graduate entry, and Physiology. At graduate level, the School delivers a portfolio of more than 50 Masters, Diploma and Certificate courses for hospital doctors, family practitioners, scientists, radiographers and healthcare practitioners. Our School is an internationally recognised and accredited provider of healthcare education with long established global partnerships and affiliations with academic and clinical institutions. UCD offer a 5 and 6-year Medicine course. Students with high grades (and two lab science subjects including Chemistry) in A-Levels or IB may be considered for direct entry to Stage 2 (5-year course). Most students applying to UCD through the 天美传媒 are accepted into Stage 2 medicine (5-year course) at UCD after successful application and interview.

Clinical Electives Abroad

Each year, students compete for highly prized international clinical and research elective opportunities at UCD鈥檚 international partner institutions. Through their global reach, UCD have established a robust suite of connections with some of the world鈥檚 most prestigious institutions, including Harvard Medical School, UCLA, University of Pennsylvania, Washington University in St. Louis, McMaster University and more. These clinical electives allow students to explore interest in specialties during their clinical years and the experience and knowledge gained from these placements helps when applying for residencies upon graduation. Students also benefit from the experience of working, living and studying within a different healthcare system and some take the opportunity to take voluntary learning and electives in the developing world.

Intercalated Degrees and Student Research

The majority of UCD鈥檚 large and expert faculty are active researchers contributing to the discovery of new knowledge and to the continual development of the curriculum. Many are clinicians who practise in the community, in acute hospitals or in specialist care centres. UCD faculty hold senior leadership positions within the University, at the teaching hospitals and across the Irish health service. UCD School of Medicine has a wide and dynamic research portfolio extending from in silico bioinformatics, molecular laboratory investigations of disease to clinical research evaluating new therapeutic strategies. UCD鈥檚 Clinical Research Centre (CRC) supports clinician-led research trials at St Vincent鈥檚 University Hospital and the Mater University hospital. The School is home to 17 research centres from the UCD Conway Institute, Systems Biology Ireland, UCD Charles Institute for Dermatology, Centre in Translation Oncology, Centre for Arthritis Research and Centre for Precision Surgery, allowing UCD students access to some of the most cutting edge research opportunities. UCD teaching is research-informed and research-led.

In addition, UCD offer opportunities for students to undertake independent or structured research under the supervision of expert research faculty as part of or in addition to normal programme coursework. These opportunities include: Summer Student Research Awards Programme (SSRA), International research electives and Intercalated research masters in medical science. UCD value science as the foundation of healthcare and so scientific knowledge is at the core of all UCD programmes. Many staff are involved in multi-national research projects and clinical trials, contributing to UCD鈥檚 global footprint in healthcare science research.

Teaching Hospitals

The School has developed an extensive and expanding clinical training network in partnership with Ireland鈥檚 leading acute, specialist and general hospitals including: two of the country鈥檚 largest acute hospitals (St Vincent鈥檚 University Hospital (SVUH) and Mater Misericordiae University Hospital (MMUH), Maternity Hospitals (National Maternity Hospital and Coombe Women鈥檚 & Infants University Hospital), and Paediatric Hospitals: (Children鈥檚 Health Ireland (CHI) at Temple Street and Crumlin). Our students are supported by the country鈥檚 largest clinical faculty comprising over 600 hospital consultants, 120 family practitioners and 25 radiographers.

Learning Environment

The Health Sciences Centre is the home of the UCD School of Medicine and links directly with the UCD Conway Institute for Biomolecular and Biomedical Research, the UCD Charles Institute of Dermatology and Systems Biology Ireland. UCD Charles Institute of Dermatology is the largest single investment into dermatological research and education in Ireland. The Health Sciences Centre is designed to support interdisciplinary education, research and social interaction whilst preserving a degree of identity for each discipline. Medicine, Nursing, Radiography and Physiotherapy groups are arranged in three wings around the Health Sciences Library. Lecture theatres, ranging in capacity from 40 to 320 seats, are situated on the ground floor, along with an open access computer suite, the IT services centre as well as a social space and restaurant facilities. Clinical skills teaching wards and laboratories are located on the first floor, grouped around the central library atrium with small group class, tutorial, meeting rooms and offices arranged around the periphery, a design which provides natural light, ventilation and interaction. Throughout the building, the multidisciplinary approach to education and research is strengthened by the presence of cutting-edge audiovisual and computing equipment and services. The simulated wards and clinical skills areas contain ceiling mounted digital video systems that allow either student or educator-led recording of patient interview, examination and investigation. This user-friendly system is ideal for both autonomous and directed student learning.

Internship and Specialization

After successfully completing the Final Medical Examination and graduating, medical graduates are required to undergo internship training to achieve full registration with the Irish Medical Council.

The Intern Year is a 12-month post-graduate program that offers supervised and supported learning for medical graduates from Irish universities. To participate, graduates must apply to the Health Service Executive (HSE) and secure a place through a competitive selection process. Intern doctors receive a salary from the HSE, and these posts are essential for attaining registration as medical practitioners with the Medical Council of Ireland.

Throughout the Intern Year, participants gain hands-on experience in patient care, undergo training, and take on clinical responsibilities. This experience plays a pivotal role in developing personal and professional competencies, preparing graduates for a successful career in medicine.

While UCD School of Medicine makes every effort to support students in the search for an internship post, students apply and compete for internship posts in an open jobs market.

After the internship year, doctors can apply for specialized training programs known as 鈥淏asic Specialist Training鈥� (BST), “Higher Specialist Training” (HST) and “Specialist Registrar (SpR) Training.” These programs are designed to provide comprehensive knowledge and clinical experience in a chosen medical specialty.

In Medicine, the primary degrees MB, BCh, and BAO are only the start of your career, as all branches of Medicine require postgraduate training of 3-7 years after the post graduation hospital intern year.

Many graduates choose to undertake part of their postgraduate training abroad, and the Medical School academic staff are readily available to provide guidance and advice on the various opportunities available for specialization.

Student Life

Your student experience at UCD is something that you will carry with you throughout your life and your career. UCD want you to graduate having experienced the full social and academic spectrum of college life. You will find that sports clubs, societies and an active social life are vital ingredients of your university experience and being part of the UCD community. The UCD Campus has to be experienced to be believed. Our facilities include world-class teaching and research facilities, excellent accommodation, a huge sports centre with an Olympic-size swimming pool, state-of-theart 3D cinema and interactive laboratories, some of which are unique to UCD. UCD Medical Society (MEDSOC) UCD Medical Society is one of the largest faculty societies in UCD and is open for membership to all UCD students. MedSoc hosts a variety of academic and social events. These events include careers evenings, USMLE advisory talks, debating tournaments, medical case competitions, guest speakers, night club events, scavenger hunts and sporting events.

One Health Society, an interdisciplinary society dedicated to improving the lives of all species 鈥� human and animal 鈥� through the integration of human medicine, veterinary medicine and environmental science鈥檚 with members from across the campus including vets, medics, nurses, agricultural and environmental scientists and anybody with an interest in One Health.

UCD Malaysian Society MSoc promotes bonding between Malaysians and non-Malaysians alike through mouth-watering cuisines, many languages, and unique festivals. Anyone and everyone is welcome to come and spend quality time together as a family. Throughout the academic year, the Malaysian Society hosts a variety of events.

UCD Sports Clubs Clubs provide a huge range of opportunities to train, play and compete in sport, no matter what your passion, ability or level. There are nearly 60 sports clubs to choose from, ranging from team sports, adventure sports and water sports to martial arts and archery.

UCD WOODLAND WALKS A series of woodland walks comprising over 8km of treelined pathways have been developed on our beautiful 133 hectare campus as part of UCD鈥檚 programme to maintain and enhance the ecological diversity. These walks offer campus residents the opportunity to take a break from studies and get some exercise while surrounded by nature.

UCD and Dublin are served by a large international airport. With major European capitals just a short flight away, Dublin is an ideal base from which you can easily explore the rest of Europe. A compact, cosy, yet bustling city, Dublin is easy to navigate and the city centre is within walking distance, or just a short bus ride, from UCD. Safe and recently cited as one of the friendliest cities in Europe, the city is popular with international students. There is a vibrant arts and performance scene and the city hosts many annual events such as the St Patrick鈥檚 Festival, Chinese New Year Festival and Culture Night. Dublin is a treasure trove of great restaurants with food to cater for everyone鈥檚 tastes, as well as pubs, coffee shops, and music venues that are important meeting and social venues for both Dubliners and visitors.

Accommodation

Finding the right accommodation is a crucial aspect of your student life at UCD. We understand the importance of having a comfortable and supportive living environment that complements your academic journey. ACCOMMODATION AT BELFIELD Ireland鈥檚 largest university campus, UCD is a vibrant student community with over 3,000 students living in on-campus accommodation just 7km from Dublin City Centre. UCD Residences provides safe, comfortable and modern accommodation. Students can choose from apartments, halls and catered accommodation, and all UCD accommodation is single-room and apartment style. Campus safety is a priority, and 24-hour security is in operation. On-campus residential services include:

Each location has a team of Residential Assistants who are current students. They work closely with the Service Team to provide out-of-hours services for residents. Specially adapted facilities are provided for students with disabilities.

Ireland itself as a country is also beautiful, and its people so welcoming. I sometimes find myself slipping in 鈥榞rand鈥� and 鈥榗raic鈥� when I speak, and have somehow become fond of Irish humour. What鈥檚 nice is that 天美传媒 also links us with other Malaysian students in Ireland, so there鈥檚 always a home away from home to seek familiarity in.

Studying medicine at University College Dublin has given me the invaluable opportunity to gain a global perspective and broaden my horizons.

One of the key strengths of UCD’s medical program is the emphasis on practical learning. Throughout each course, there is a strong emphasis on hands-on experiences, including dissection labs that have been invaluable in visualizing anatomical regions. In Malaysia, access to dissection labs is limited, and I truly appreciate the chance to engage in such practical learning at UCD. Additionally, the tutorial sessions in smaller groups have been immensely beneficial, allowing for discussions and better understanding of clinical equipment used in real-world medical settings. Hi, my name is Mae Shan and I鈥檓 a 4th year medical student at University College Dublin.

Being here in Ireland for a good 4 years has been wonderful and an eye-opener. The first year was difficult as adjusting to a new environment and being away from home was hard, but it is still exciting to return back to Ireland every new school term.

The decision I made to come to Ireland was to allow me to have different connections with people all over the world and learn more about different cultures. A lot of people will ask why Ireland and not UK, I think it is about preference. I can say that Dublin is more to a manageable city compare to London or other cities in UK.
